Project for the Operation and Maintenance of the Sindhuli Road Project

The Project is to implement the proposed permanent countermeasures against road disasters within the Section I, II and IV in order to secure timely operation of Banepa–Sindhuli–Bardibas Road. The counter measure works for Road Disaster Prevention at 29 sections within Sindhuli Road (159 km) were constructed under 6 pilot projects. The services were provided to assist in design and construction supervision, which involved topographical survey at different sections of the road for the improvement of road geometry and 3 land slide areas; design and cost estimation of road improvement and road safety improvement works such as geometry improvement, road widening, landslide stabilization and road safety measures; and construction supervision of these works (total value NRs 165 million involving local contractors).

Detailed Engineering Design and Construction Supervision of Sanfebagar-Mangalsen and Martadi Roads, Road Improvement Project

RIP included upgrading of 97 km roads comprising of Sanfebagar-Mangalsen (39 km) and Safebagar-Martadi (57km) roads to provide connectivity with district headquarters of Accham and Bajura in Far Western Development Region. The scope of services included: Survey and design of upgrading of Sanfebagar Barjugad section (31 km) of Sanfebagar-Martadi Road to bituminous standard with Otta seal and design of new road construction from Km 43 to 57; socio-economic baseline study of both roads; Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) of upgrading section of Sanfebagar-Martadi Road from Km 15 to Km 31 and update of IEE of Km 0 to 15 and EIA of Km 43 to Km 57 and preparation of site EMAP for these sections; land acquisition and resettlement plan for new construction section (Km 43 to 57); and Construction supervision of upgrading and new construction of Sanfebagar-Martadi Road (57 km) and upgrading of Sanfebagar-Mangalsen (39 km) to bituminous standard. Road Network Project, Detailed Design and Procurement Assistance [ADB Loan No 2187-BHU], Bhutan

The Project (i.e. RNP) aimed at improvement in transport efficiency on part of national highway network and to expand physical accessibility in rural areas of the Bhutan, which will contribute to economic development and poverty reduction. The project consisted of: (i) periodic maintenance, rehabilitation and improvement of Trongsa-Gelephu National Highway (i.e.NH3) in about 121 km selected sections (i.e. Gelephu-Tingtibi, 97.6 km and Kuenga Rabten – Trongsa, 23 km); construction of about 16 km realignment (between Tingtibi and Wangdigang bridge): and upgrading of two bridges (Wangdigang and Yeshigang); and (ii) construction of 4 new feeder roads -111 km, which include Autsho-Garbagtang (54 km) and Kharungla-Kangpara (34.5 km) in the east region and Mirchim- Bongo (18.5 km)and Tekizam-Bjena(6.1 km) in the west region. Moreover, the project will contribute to enhance capacity of DOR for managing road asset; and equip to develop private sector participation in domestic construction industry. The project cost was US$ 34.1 million. The consulting assignment included detailed design of periodic maintenance, rehabilitation, improvement of 121 km sections of NH3; design review and finalization of NH3 realignment section and upgrading of Wangdigang and Yeshigang bridges, and 4 feeder roads (111 km); update of EMP; social safeguard and resettlement of feeder roads; and preparation of bid documents and assistance to procurement of civil works. GEOCE provided team leadership as well as all international inputs required for this consulting assignment.

Feasibility Study for Upgrading of Mirchaiya-Katari- Sunkoshi Road, Road Maintenance and Development Project-Rehabilitation Component

Feasibility study carried out for upgrading of Mirchaiya-Katari- Sunkoshi Road, 73 km to all weather Feeder Road Standards with low cost bituminous sealed gravel road. The existing road is partly gravel (Mirchaiya-Katari, 27 km) and partly earth (Katari-Sunkoshi, 46 km) surface. The study and design of bituminous sealed gravel road considered various options of bituminous surfacing such as Otta Seal, DBST and SBST, while the material options also included intermediate type of pavement layer of semi-processed crusher run material (termed as Type 1 Subbase) to impart certain structural ability to sealed gravel pavement. The design also included 22.75 km lined drains, 17 causeways, 2 km retaining structures, gully protection at 17 locations, slope stabilization including bioengineering. The cost estimate of the proposed road upgrading is about NRs 280 million.

Road Maintenance and Development Project, Rehabilitation Component

Road Maintenance and Development Project (RMDP) funded by World Bank has three components- New Roads and Upgrading (445 km), Rehabilitation (161 km), and Periodic Maintenance (470 km) of strategic roads. Total project cost is about US$ 65 million. Main works under Rehabilitation Component consisted of Rehabilitation of Siddhartha Highway, Tansen (Bartung) – Syangja Section (85 km); Upgrading of Harthok – Tamghas Road (63 km)and Upgrading of Kothi-Taulihawa Road (14 km). The nature of work involved pavement resealing and rehabilitation with DBST surfacing, drainage improvement and slope stabilization in Tansen–Syangja road; geometric improvement, drainage improvement, gravel surfacing and slope stabilization in Harthok–Tamghas road and surface upgrading
to bituminous standard with DBST wearing course in Kothi–Taulihawa road. Bioengineering measures were extensively used in stabilization of road slopes on Tansen – Syangja and Harthok – Tamghas roads. The scope of services include construction supervision of rehabilitation works on about 160 km roads comprising Tansen-Syangja (85km), Kothi-Taulihawa (14 km) and Harthok-Tamghas (63 km) roads including environmental monitoring and management, PBME studies.

Feasibility Study of Kathmandu-Naubise Alternate Road Project

The project was for feasibility study and basic design of alternative road from Kathmandu to Naubise. Existing road from Naubise to Kathmandu is over trafficked and is considered as less flexible for improvement. The proposed road will be about 22 km including 2 bridges and 500m tunnel. Approximate project cost will be US $ 57 million. The scope of services was carried out in three phases: (i) Feasibility Study Phase, which include preliminary survey of alternative road alignments and socio-economic survey to prepare socio-economic profile of the project road area (household survey was carried out on 300 samples); (ii) Basic Design Phase, which comprised detailed topographical survey and DTM preparation of selected road alignment covering average 200m width of road corridor in 1:1000 scale; inventory of slope instabilities along the proposed road alignment and part of Naubise - Thankot road; and outline design for stabilization of slope instabilities; and (iii) EIA Study (as per Environmental Protection Regulation, 1997) comprising preparation of scoping document and terms of reference, field works, preparation of draft report, public hearing and final report.

Project for Construction of Sindhuli Road, Basic Design Study of Nepalthok-Khurkot Section III,
Topographical Survey, Geological Survey and Monitoring of Mulkot Landslide

Section III, Nepalthok-Khurkot is among four sections of Banepa-Sindhuli- Bardibas Road. Total length of this section is 32 km and the proposed alignment mostly runs along right bank of Sunkoshi River and series of landslides occur at Mulkot, Jhangajholi VDC area. Most of the landslides were active especially during monsoon. The scope of services included survey, investigation and monitoring of the Mulkot landslide. Details of work consisted of landslide cross section survey of (1200 m), drilling works at three locations totaling 70.5 m depth, installation of PVC Pipes including Strain gauges (total 64 m) in three boreholes, peg setting work for monitoring at 20 locations, setting up tiltmeters (total 24 no) at 12 locations, construction of protection boxes for tiltmeters and strain gauges, construction of hut for watchman, setting up of rain gauge including setting of automatic recording equipment, monitoring i.e. Peg head survey, Tiltmeter observation, strain gauge reading, ground water level reading at 3 boreholes and rain gauge reading; analysis and preparation of report.

Bridge Upgrading and Maintenance Project [CNTR 97 3932]

The purpose of the project was to develop and enhance Nepal's bridge sector, by extending the use of local materials, using appropriate technologies and engaging local communities in the construction and maintenance of bridges. It was the first bridge project in Nepali road sector aimed at strengthening the DOR's capacity to manage the bridge assets in the Strategic Road Network (SRN) and enhance the Private sector skills to provide bridge design, construction and maintenance services. The project focus was to ensure all year use of two key roads (Narayanghat-Butwal section of East –West Highway and Biratnagar-Rangeli) on the national road network.

Feasibility Study of Kanti Rajpath Improvement

Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project, Third & Fourth Years Periodic Maintenance Program [IDA Credit No. 2578-NEP]

Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project (RMRP) is one of the largest World Bank funded road project in Nepal. The project had two components-Periodic Maintenance Program (PMP) for clearing backlog maintenance of about 500 km road and it was implemented in four yearly programs (i.e. First Year, Second Year and Third and Fourth Year) and Rehabilitation Program for about 150 km roads.
Under Third and Fourth Years Periodic Maintenance Program pavement resurfacing and strengthening, drainage improvement and landslide stabilization in Syangja-Pokhara (37 km) sector of Siddartha Highway and pavement resurfacing and strengthening and drainage improvement of Ataria-Balia- Karnali (74 km) sector of East-West Highway were undertaken. The construction cost of the Third and Fourth Years Periodic Maintenance Program, which was executed in two contract packages, was about NRs. 60 million. The scope of services included design review and construction supervision of periodic maintenance of above roads (total 111 km). Nature of works consisted of pavement resurfacing (DBST, SBST), drainage improvement, slope protection, bio-engineering etc.

Biratnagar-Rangeli Road Feasibility Study

The study was undertaken for feasibility assessment of road rehabilitation and replacement of existing wooden bridges in 22 km Biratnagar - Rangeli Road. The road alignment crosses several drainage channels, streams and rivers of which Judi, Cheka and Chisang are the major ones. These rivers were provided with wooden bridges. The bituminous road has deteriorated to the extent requiring rehabilitation. Arniko Highway Project, Phase II, Package 2 Works

The scope of services were two fold (i) Detailed engineering design for rehabilitation of road pavement and off-road structures (landslides stabilization, gully control, river training, and bridge rehabilitation) in Arniko Highway, Sector 3 from Dolalghat to Barhabise (31 km). Detailed tasks involved surveys (engineering, road inventory, bridge condition etc); pavement investigation and evaluation; selection of rehabilitation options of pavement and off-road structures on the basis of technical and economic analysis; detailed design of pavement rehabilitation with emulsion aggregate mix (EAM) base and crushed stone base overlay, bituminous premix wearing course and DBST shoulders, road side drains, culverts, causeways, retaining structures, landslide stabilization, slope protection, gully control, bridge rehabilitation, bioengineering; cost estimates and BOQ; preparation of technical specifications separately for pavement and off-road structures; and (ii) Check Engineer to advise the supervision team on design aspects, design of additional works, occasional inspection of construction activities during construction phase of the project, involving two construction contracts of about NRs 330 million for pavement and off - road works. Apart from others, design of additional works also included site investigation and design of Awale Khlola Bridge (12 m span) near Lamosangu, which was damaged by flood.

Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project, First Year Periodic Maintenance Program [IDA Credit No. 2578 - NEP]

The scope of services included design and construction supervision for periodic maintenance and upgrading/rehabilitation of 110 km highway and feeder roads of the strategic road network. It included resealing of Hetauda – Narayanghat Road (75 km), regraveling of Tansen – Harthok (11 km) section of Tansen - Tamghas Road and rehabilitation/upgrading of Ataria – Chaudhar (26 km) section of East- West Highway. The nature of maintenance work on Hetauda–Narayanghat road included resealing with DBST after pre-treatments including localized pavement reconstruction/strengthening and drainage improvement. While rehabilitation/upgrading of  Ataria- Chaudhar road section included geometry improvement from single to double lane standard along with partial to full reconstruction of pavement with subbase, wet mix crushed stone base and DBST wearing course; drainage improvement; retaining structures; minor road junctions etc. Similarly, periodic maintenance on Tansen – Harthok road included formation reshaping, subgrade improvement and gravel pavement (subbase + gravel wearing course); and other works like drainage improvement, retaining structures, gully protection and erosion control; landslide stabilization/slope protection using bioengineering techniques. In addition the scope of work also included design for improvement of 16 km, Kothi-Taulihawa section of Lumbini–Taulihawa Road to bituminous standard with DBST surfacing. The works were carried out 4 contracts (3 NCB and 1 ICB contracts of total cost about NRs 265 million). While all the works were accomplished on time, the rehabilitation/upgrading of 26 km Ataria-Chaudhar section of East-West Highway was completed in a record time of 15 months. The quality of construction work on this road became exemplary to Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Project.

Detail Survey and Design of District Gravel Road and Flood Protection Works

Bishnumati Link Road Project [ADB Loan No-1240 NEP (SF)]

The Bishnumati Link Road (BLR) was proposed to provide link from Kalimati in the south-west of Kathmandu to the Balaju Road in the north, largely following the Bishnumati river bank. It would facilitate the predominant axis of movement north-south between Kathmandu and Patan, which is forecasted to accentuate with the expansion of urban development south of Patan. Additionally, it would relieve traffic congestion in the historic core area of Kathmandu. The road would further provide opportunity to improve the environment of Bishnumati river corridor. BLR will cover a length of about 3 km with a 20 m right of way to incorporate two 4 m wide road lanes, two 3 m parking cycle lanes and two 3 m utility reserves. The road will also encompass a 60 m skew bridge over Bishnumati River. Services include surveys and investigation, design and preparation of PQ and bid documents of the project works. The construction cost of the project was estimated as NRs. 300 million.

The design for Sagarmatha road included geometry design of alignment, drainage, retaining structures, and pavement with DBST wearing course; and design of RCC and Steel bridges (Sun Koshi, 131 m and Dudha Koshi, 110 m; and Adheri Khola, 20 m; Tuwa Khola, 21m; and Sapsu Khola, 60m). Nature of job comprised of geometric improvement, drainage maintenance and rehabilitation, pavement strengthening/maintenance, slope stabilization etc. The nature of road improvement works consisted of geometric improvement; partial to full reconstruction of pavement with DBST and bituminous premix surfacing; improvement of drainage, slope stabilization. While, the pavement maintenance works included resealing with SBST/DBST after
pre-treatment and resurfacing with bituminous premix overlays. The total value of road improvement and maintenance works was about US $ 40 million and comprised 3 ICB and 15 LCB contracts.

Design and construction supervision of river training and flood protection works as means of rehabilitation of major damages caused by 1987 flood at eight locations of river crossings on central and eastern sectors of the East West Highway. Various types of river training and flood protection works were designed and implemented. The river crossings are Kali, Kamal, Kerkha, Biring in the Eastern Region and Kamala, Lal Bakeya, East Rapti and Manahari in the Central Region. The construction cost of the project was approximately NRs. 130 million.

Arun Access Road Project

The project was for detail design of access road to a major hydropower project in eastern Nepal. After completion of feasibility study detail design of the project was carried out. The design phase services include geotechnical investigation, construction materials survey, bridge site investigation by geophysical method for 172 km hill road alignment from Basantpur to Num, the proposed site of the Arun III Hydroelectric Project (340 MW).

The project was for the improvement of 132 km eastern sector of the East – West Highway to two lanes.
